AI models vs real models: which one, and when
By the IsraModel AI team · Published
The difference is not that one is good and the other is bad. A real shoot and an AI model solve different problems. Here is where each one is the better choice, with real model-shoot rates from studios’ own price pages.

The short answer
Use AI models for the volume work: catalog images, new arrivals, colorways, marketplace listings and ad tests, where you need many consistent images fast. Book a real shoot for the moments where a real person matters: a brand campaign, a face that represents you, movement and fit that customers will scrutinize, and video. Many stores do both: AI for most images, a real shoot for the hero campaign.
What a real model shoot costs
Two US studios that publish their rates, as displayed on their own pages:
- Squareshot: model shoots “From $95 per image, or $2,950 for a 4-hour shoot”, with a pay-as-you-go minimum of 5 outfits / 20 images for model work.
- soona: $39 per photo, a $149 studio fee per booking without a membership, a full body model at $159 per hour and hair and makeup at $299 per model, at retail rates.
Both checked October 15, 2026. These are starting rates; Squareshot also lists add-ons such as a model usage rights extension, and a location shoot or an agency model can add more.
With AI, a standard image costs 5 credits and the free plan includes 5 standard images a month. Current plans are on the pricing page.
When AI models are the better choice
- Many products, little time. A new collection can be online the same day, from phone photos, a flat lay or a mannequin.
- Variety. Show the same item on different models, including plus-size and male models, without booking each one.
- Consistency. Keep the same model and the same look across hundreds of products, and add new items months later that still match.
- Testing. Try several backgrounds or models for an ad before spending on a shoot.
- Reshoots. A wrong background or a dated look is a few minutes of work, not a new booking.

When a real model shoot is the better choice
- A brand face. If one person represents your brand in campaigns, press and events, that has to be a real person.
- Fit is the product. For tailoring, technical sportswear or lingerie, customers judge how the garment sits on a body. A real fitting shows that; an AI image shows a plausible version of it.
- Complex movement and interaction. Dance, sport, people interacting with each other or with a real place.
- Video. English accounts at IsraModel AI create still images only.
- Fine details that must be exact. Small prints, text and logos can come out altered in any AI image. Check every image against the product, and shoot these items for real if they keep changing.
How to keep AI model photos honest
The rule that keeps customers trusting the photos: the product in the image must be the product they receive. Compare color, length, neckline and details with the real item before you publish, and regenerate any image where something changed. Use the same model across a collection so the store looks like one shoot, and pick faces from a catalog of realistic models rather than generating a new stranger for every product.
Some marketplaces and countries have their own rules about labeling AI images or how a product may be shown. Check the rules for where you sell.

Questions
Are AI models cheaper than real models?
For catalog volume, usually yes. Squareshot lists model shoots from $95 per image and soona lists a full body model at $159 per hour (both checked October 15, 2026). With IsraModel AI, a standard image costs 5 credits, and the free plan includes 5 standard images a month.
Can customers tell an AI model from a real one?
A well-made AI image can look like a studio photo, but mistakes happen: altered prints, odd hands, or a garment that is not quite the original. Review every image against the real product before you publish.
When should I still book a real model?
For a brand campaign with a recognizable face, for products where fit on a real body is what customers judge, for complex movement, and for video.
Can I use the same AI model across my whole store?
Yes. Choose a model from the catalog and keep using her or him across products, so the collection looks like one consistent shoot.
